Description
Abstract: Songs from Georgia (Caucasus) continue to seduce singers around the world. In this session I’ll share some of the fruits of my own travels and research in Georgia. A set of video clips featuring ensembles such as Rustavi, Riho, Mtiebi, Chevenburebi and Adilei will illustrate the different regional styles and performance contexts. We’ll explore aspects of the post-Soviet revival and current debates in Georgia around issues of authenticity and performance style, and we’ll hear what the singers themselves have to say about the place of singing and performance in their lives today. We’ll also journey (virtually!) with some of the ‘foreign’ singers who make the pilgrimage to study with the old Georgian songmasters on summer singing camps and we’ll reflect on the doors that are opened when we meet other people through a shared passion for singing. I’ll also have a selection of songbooks and CDs which people are welcome to look at after the workshop.Period | 13 Jan 2018 |
