Authorship Analysis for Investigative and Forensic Purposes

Activity: Talk or presentationInvited talkTeaching

The aim of this workshop is to explain how authorship analysis is currently done in real-life forensic investigations. The simulated case will be based on real-life authorship analysis situations where the owner of a mobile phone denies having written certain chat transcripts containing incriminating evidence. Using a comparison data extracted from the defendant’s phone a comparative authorship analysis will be performed to determine the likelihood that the defendant authored the text messages constituting evidence of a crime. The workshop will take the participants from the data extraction to the writing of the expert witness report in order to gain a better awareness of how this work is done in real casework. The first part of the workshop will explain the process theoretically while the second part will show the process step by step using the simulated forensically realistic data set. Participants are encouraged to bring their laptop to the workshop in order to better explore and evaluate the evidence and the results of the analysis in digital format, as the material is too extensive to be printed.
