Description

The roundtable explored conceptualizations in the field of inquiry called ‘settler colonial studies’ which has been credited with a useful clarification of the landscape of ethno-racial relations in Latin American studies by—among other things—emphasizing the persistence of coloniality across time periods otherwise formally separated. Settler colonial studies’ paradigmatic reified kernel opposition between settlers and indigenous peoples explains its popularity in indigenous studies. It undoubtedly helped better formulate the plight and struggles of indigenous peoples. However, critical voices in various sub-fields related to communities actually not included in that paradigmatic kernel have deplored a neo-essentialist tendency in its construction of indigeneity and its obvious marginalization of a variety of ‘non-settler’ and ‘non-indigenous’ groups, whose plights and struggles for rights are not even considered, pushed out by the kernel’s preeminence. This roundtable/discussion will bring together Latin Americanist scholars who have been engaged in indigenous and Afro-Latin American studies, and other related sub-fields to share their perspectives and reflections on the pros and cons of settler colonial studies’ impacts in Latin American studies.
