'Destroy the patriarchy, not the climate': ecofeminism and the climate emergency

Activity: Talk or presentationInvited talkTeaching and Research

Ecofeminist scholars and activists been highlighting how gender inequality intersects with the environmental crisis for at least four decades. Spending much of this time at the margins of environmentalism, and often unfairly caricatured, ecofeminism is now experiencing a renaissance in the face of climate emergency. From the large number of young women and non-binary climate activists taking to the streets with protest slogans like ‘destroy the patriarchy not the planet’ to the lobbying efforts of feminist diplomats at UN climate conferences, ecofeminist insights are increasingly shaping both public debate and the search for transformative solutions to the most urgent existential threat of our time. In this seminar, Sherilyn MacGregor explains the evolution of ecofeminism around the world and give contemporary examples of ecofeminists’ responses to the climate emergency, from the concept of ‘feminist climate justice’ to policy proposals for a ‘feminist green new deal’.
