Description
E Pieri (2018) ‘Pandemic Outbreak!’ Public event. J Rylands Library, Manchester city centre Fri 9th November 2018. I organised and ran this public engagement event as part of the ESRC Festival of Social Sciences. This event included a short presentation on pandemic threats and current plans to tackle it, as well as the online simulation of a fictional global pandemic outbreak starting in Manchester. The simulation was followed by a lively public debate on the ethics and social impacts of plans and mitigation measures (e.g. quarantine) and related issues (e.g. how to allocate scarce resources). Members of the public also accessed a display of historical maps of incidence of disease in Manchester, which I selected from the John Rylands' Medical Archive to offer an historical context to some of the latest modelling and simulation work conducted on pandemic disease.
