Description
Ownership, empowerment and transformation have become key concepts within the field of community music. These three ideas are often used to describe the effects that engaging in community music may have on individuals (Veblen, 2007; Deane & Mullen 2017). Although the concepts have become widely accepted and used by funders, practitioners and art organisations there is currently a lack of exploration into the usage of these notions, their meaning and how they may be manifesting within community music practice. As part of my ongoing PhD research I am currently interrogating these terms.Within this presentation, I will set out my current findings from a pilot case study that is being undertaken alongside Community Music Spark (Sage Gateshead) a project working with young people aged 15-25 years living with special educational needs. The project aims to develop participants musical, social and leadership skills through a structured traineeship programme.
Using a mixed methodological approach, the following three questions guide my inquiry:
1) How does Community Music Spark employ the terms ownership, empowerment and transformation?
2) What constitutes a form of;
• ownership and how are musicians supporting this notion within their practice?
• empowerment and how are musicians supporting this notion within their practice?
• transformation and how are musicians supporting this notion within their practice?
3) To what extent does a music project bring about ownership, empowerment and transformation for participants, and what are the implications of doing so?
By exploring these concepts within a community music project working with young people living with special educational needs, community musicians and music educators can better understand the implications these notions may have for this demographic and how their practice may support the facilitation of these notions.
