Description

What is 'klezmer'? In this show, former members of The University of Manchester's klezmer ensemble (The Michael Kahan Kapelye) and members of Manchester's klezmer community (The Hard Times Kapelye) join forces to explore, in words and music, klezmer's journeys over time and continents, and within and between communities. As a musical genre, it has travelled from the Old World shtetls of Eastern Europe to the New World Jewish immigrant communities in the USA, and, through the revival of the 1970s/80s, has returned once more to the Old World. In the process, it has become a global musical resource, linked indelibly to its roots but melded too by its journeys to and from new worlds. Come and hear these stories and listen to a Mancunian twist on the evocative sound of klezmer ....
