New Dimensions in Silicon Pixel Detectors

    We are delighted to hold this meeting dedicated to the discussion of pixel detectors with precise timing capabilities, bringing together experts in both the technologies and their application. We shall have dedicated talks and discussions on:
    - Sensor Technologies including LGAD, 3D, HV-CMOS and an Electronics Overview
    - Applications both within HEP experiments and in the broader community

    Silicon sensor pixel detectors are well established across a wide range of applications, from particle detectors used in high energy physics and light sources, to digital cameras and medical imaging equipment. Four-dimensional sensors, in which precise timing information is simultaneously extracted with the spatial measurement, are an emerging technology with the potential to significantly augment the performance and range of such devices, provided that the timing information can be reliably extracted without adversely impacting the constraints on pixel size or read-out bandwidth.

    One clear use-case is future particle detectors operating in the HL-LHC era. Here the experiments will benefit from precise timing information in the tracking systems, to reliably associate particles to the correct primary interaction vertex, and improve pattern recognition performance. For this application, the devices must also tolerate large radiation doses due to their proximity to the interaction region. Timing information can also benefit calorimeter systems, providing useful information for particle identification algorithms, and discriminating between hadronic showers from different interactions.

    The technologies proposed to achieve these goals are in the early stages of investigation and are subject to many challenges, including those related to the read-out electronics. This meeting will bring together relevant experts from the UK and the international community, from academia and industry, to share the latest results from prototype devices, and discuss the steps needed to fulfill the resolution and radiation hardness criteria.
