Description
In this talk I will introduce architectural research (and contrast it with architectural design processes). I am interested in how (and where) we can start research projects, how and why we ask questions, and what kind of knowledge is produced as a result. I introduce several of my own projects—some on art and architecture; on ringroads; and on temporary architecture (especially fairgrounds), and I will then work across these projects to explain the research methods I used: including archival research; ethnographic observation; on-site interviews; filmmaking; storytelling; drawing. I will be joined by one of my PhD students, Qiwei Peng, who is writing her PhD on social infrastructure and elevated highways. She spent parts of 2022-23 in Chongqing, and she will present some of her project and methods
