Description

Multidisciplinary conference exploring the many crises the EU faces (organised by the Centre of European Legal Studies, Cambridge).
The theme of the conference was the contextualisation of the Eurocrisis, and the exploration of a broader systemic background that might have created or fostered it. Various perspectives (doctrinal, theoretical, empirical and institutional) from an array of social science disciplines were explored during the event - with the Eurocrisis acting as the basis for discussion.

The Eurocrisis has been a seminal milestone in the history of European integration which has challenged not only the strength and legitimacy of the EU’s institutional structure, but also the conceptual core of the European project itself. The conference aimed to reconnect legal analysis about the crisis with the broader themes that had been the focus of other disciplines and determine whether the crisis is best to be theorised as a failure of particular policy choices, or whether it is symptomatic of a deeper systemic failure of the European project.
The conference proposed to move beyond traditional legal debates about the crisis in three ways:

By going beyond the exploration of the immediate legal and institutional responses to the crisis, that have largely been the focus of legal analysis so far, and examining its broader consequences and effects (empirical level);
By identifying the different dimensions and aspects of the crisis and moving beyond its conceptualisation as a primarily economic - and largely isolated - phenomenon (conceptual level);
By looking at the extent to which these can be linked to the to the structural, normative, political and philosophical foundations of the EU (systemic level).
