Description
The Women in Environmental Sciences (WiES) network launched in 2018 with an award from the University of Manchester’s Office for Social Responsibility. It is an inclusive, cross-disciplinary network for women working in ecology and environmental sciences, based at the University of Manchester. Through collective interaction and sharing of ideas, WiES aims to accelerate systemic change in women’s STEM education while appealing for changes in policies. The WiES held two events (2018 and 2019) guided by the 17 SDGs, in which women with diverse experiential and disciplinary backgrounds could cooperatively participate in discussions and networking. The WiES report – (How women can and must be engaged in the fight against climate change (https://www.meri.manchester.ac.uk/wies/research/resources/) presents the key messages from the events to provide resources for anyone working with women, the environmental sciences, and their communities. It also provides a toolkit (WiES Toolkit- Lessons from Women in Environmental Sciences https://www.meri.manchester.ac.uk/wies/research/resources/) for developing participation strategies that are inclusive, collective, and progressive; the toolkit amalgamates key learning outcomes from the events so that others can draw and build on them in advancing the importance and the role of women in environmental sciences. Key areas of learning included: bringing women together; understanding the potential role of women in environmental sciences; reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of the environmental sciences; providing an empowering and informal atmosphere.Period | 15 Jan 2018 → … |
