    Description

As part of the Year of Engineering 2018, the Science Museum in London put together a programme of events to celebrate and promote the many ways in which engineers change the world. On of the contributors to this event was Aisling Roche, a PhD student from the School of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Science based in the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology. She organised an interactive stand that showcased the way in which chemical and biochemical engineers can use genetic modification and DNA manipulations to study the properties of pharmaceutically-relevant proteins. The stand was designed to be fun and child friendly, with families able to learn about DNA and how engineers can use or change it through arts-and-crafts style activities where participants could take away their own DNA plasmid after making it out of pipe cleaners and beads.
