    Description

Africa’s aviation sector remains heavily dependent on external hubs in the Gulf and Europe, leaving connectivity vulnerable to geopolitical disruptions, rising operating costs and supply-chain shocks. Recent Middle Eastern airspace disruptions expose the consequences of Africa’s fragmented aviation market and limited intra-African connectivity. Although initiatives such as the Yamoussoukro Decision and Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) seek to liberalise aviation, implementation and enforcement remain weak. Strengthening African aviation therefore requires more than infrastructure investment: stronger continental institutions, effective regulatory coordination and enforceable dispute settlement mechanisms are essential to develop resilient African hubs, improve connectivity and reduce dependence on external aviation networks.
