BBC: Inequalities in Life Expectancy

Press/Media: Research

Description

The map became one of the highest performing University media stories of 2016.

The research generated considerable public and practitioner interest via social media including via the BBC Facebook page.

The article had 4,374 visits and the jpeg of the image was downloaded 1,798 times (both record numbers for the University of Manchester). The stories, which appeared in online media including the BBC, had a combined potential audience reach of 25.7million.

The research team were also contacted by the Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership to discuss the wider publication of the map. The Chief Executive of the GMHSCP Jon Rouse tweeted that the map was ‘going on my office wall as a daily reminder’. The map was also highlighted by Manchester City Council’s Age Friendly Programme, which is part of the World Health Organisation’s Age Friendly Cities network.

The research was presented as part of the All Party Political Group on Poverty at Westminster in January 2017.

In January 2017 a meeting was held with the BBC about developing the map and other evidence as part of a series of public health and social care stories linked to Devo Manc.
