BBC RADIO 2: Earliest sunset of the year

    Press/Media: Expert comment

    Description

Professor of Astrophysics Tim O'Brien has appeared on Radio 2's Simon Mayo Drivetime show, to explain why we had the earliest sunset of the year yesterday, but the shortest day does not occur until next week. He said that because the earth tilts at an angle and our orbit isn't perfectly circular, sunset and sunrise times don't match up perfectly with the length of the day.
