Sir Cary Cooper, professor of organisational psychology and health at Manchester Business School, believes that delegating to staff and developing them fulfils two objectives. “First, you're saying to them: ‘I trust you and want you to grow into your job’ – and therefore you're able to retain them.

"It enables the owner to do what they do best. If they don’t delegate and retain all business decisions and functions, they will lose good staff, find it difficult to cope with the workload and business growth will be inhibited.”
