DescriptionThe Conservative party attacked a long running investigation over its spending in the 2015 election as “politically motivated” after the Crown Prosecution Service said dozens of its MPs and officials had been investigated and would not face criminal charges.

Robert Ford, professor of political science at Manchester University, said the affair illustrated how “messy” the UK’s electoral law was.

“From an election spending perspective, the spending limits are very tight and the regulation is very heavy,” Prof Ford said.
