Title Elon Musk has paid over the odds for Twitter so he can dominate the global conversation Media name/outlet i News Media type Web Country/Territory United Kingdom Date 25/04/22 Description Musk has used the press to his advantage when lodging his takeover bid for Twitter, according to Cary Cooper, professor of organisational psychology at Manchester Business School. “He knows how to use the media,” he says. Every twist and turn of the mooted purchase of Twitter has been heavily covered by the media, while Musk has himself kept in touch with his 83 million followers on Twitter itself, updating them every step of the way about his strategy for the takeover.
And he’s shown a steely determination to get what he wants that is backed up by his ability to bankroll multi-billion-dollar bids for the social network. “A lot of entrepreneurs who are successful usually have some kind of life event when they’re young that they have no control over,” says Cooper, referencing Musk’s difficult family history.
“That enables them to accept failure and to take it in their stride – making them more willing to take big risks that can pay off. They want to win and if they fail, they fail, but they have a go at it.”
