    DescriptionHistory teaches us that Britain has always had a rich tapestry of accents. A 2016 study by linguist Dr Alexander Baratta, of Manchester University, showed that Northern trainee teachers are being instructed to “posh up” in order to be better understood by pupils. His study found the Home Counties was the most favoured accent within the teaching profession. A trainee teacher from Leicester who spoke with a “Midlands” accent was told that if she wanted to teach phonics “she should go back to where she came from”.
