    Dr Ellen Fry, an expert in plant and soil ecology at the University of Manchester, has told i she fears the fire could continue to burn underground in the moorland peat before later re-emerging even after the surface fire has been extinguished.She said: “A quite severe burn can go deep into the peat and release a huge amount of carbon as well as other greenhouse gases such as methane and the volatile elements causing pollution across Manchester.”
