iNews article: Billions of tiny plastic fibres from clothes are covering the sea floor

Press/Media: Research

Description

Billions of tiny plastic particles from clothes are finding their way from washing machines to the bottom of the seabed, scientists have confirmed.

Just one per cent of the plastic in the world’s oceans is visible from the surface, but until now scientists have been unable to prove where the missing 99 per cent settles, or how it gets there.

An international team of geologists have now solved the mystery. Their research, published in the journal Science, reveals that microplastics entering the water are being carried by deep sea currents to the ocean floor.
