A build-up of urea in the brain has been found to be a major cause of dementia, claim scientists who hailed the discovery as a potential pathway for treating the disorder.

Professor Garth Cooper from Manchester University, who led a team of researchers from the US, Australia and New Zealand, discovered that a rise in urea to toxic levels can cause brain damage – and eventually dementia.
