DescriptionSir Cary Cooper, professor of organisational psychology at the University of Manchester, says the proposals for change are needed because, on average “women are less assertive than men”.

He adds: “That’s sad really. As a father of three daughters, and as a brother of three sisters, I’ve seen it all my life. The essence of this, psychologically, is that women have historically played a nurturing role. Because men’s personal identities are so strongly linked to their role at work, they will fight to get that promotion. And because men are better at organisational politics than women, they know how to play the game.

“Women think they’re going to be treated by employers rationally. And actually when you go into a pay negotiation, you have to stand your ground. So there’s a big psychological issue here that we have to overcome.”
