    Description

It was an ordinary night last year when, in the control room of Jodrell Bank, an out-of-hours technician turned the telescope towards a pulsar: a dead, spinning star so dense that a mere teaspoon of it would weigh the same as Everest.

“He picked it out of a list of 3,000 objects that night,” says fellow controller Olly King – technicians staff the control room that faces Jodrell’s huge, main telescope 24/7, and are given overnight lists of suggested things to point it at by scientists from the University of Manchester. Often at Jodrell that’ll be a pulsar, or a quasar (remnants of young galaxies).
