DescriptionThe study, published in the BMJ, analysed the effects of seven statins in 42 trials involving more than 20,000 adults. It didn’t solely measure LDL cholesterol, but used a newer measure adopted by NICE last year. Known as ‘non-HDL-C’, it can be simply calculated by doctors by subtracting HDL (or ‘good cholesterol’) from patients’ total cholesterol levels.

Previously NHS cholesterol tests primarily examined levels of ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol. Experts say the new approach is ‘more accurate and cost effective’.
