Professor Sir Cary Cooper, professor of organisational psychology at Manchester University, said fathers had found the sheen of being 'new men' quickly wore off.

He said: 'Many men who have tried being stay-at-home dads have realised what many women have felt for years – that looking after children as a full-time role is not valued by society.

'But unlike women, there are few men in that position so there is very little social interaction. The support network is not there for fathers in the same way as it is for mothers, which can be very isolating.'...
