Scientists have developed a unique camera that can identify and predict volcanic ash plumes.

The new technology, dubbed 'AshCam', would help reduce the dangers, health risks and travel impacts of the vast clouds of ash.

An eruption in Iceland eight years ago grounded hundreds of flights across Europe as the thick ash made airspace impenetrable.

AshCam is the first piece of equipment designed to tackle this issue and it works by measuring the flow and speed of ash in a volcanic plume.
