MPharm students’ pharmacy practice research projects presented at several conferences

Three MPharm students’ research projects supervised by Dr Li-Chia Chen, senior lecturer at the Division of Pharmacy and Optometry, have been accepted as posters presented at three national conferences.

In June 2019, a fourth year MPharm graduate – Caoimhe Stewart presented her research project as a poster (photo) at the 8thClinical Pharmacy Congress, on 7 June 2019 at ExCeL, London, titled “Patients’ Experiences of a Community Pharmacy Subcutaneous Clinic”.

This early stage service evaluation demonstrated that service users had high satisfaction and excellent experiences with the injection treatments provided in the LloydsPharmacy Healthcare Centre. Overall, 93.3% of responses of service users’ survey indicated extremely likely to recommend the healthcare centre to friends or family, and 86.7% responses indicated there was no waiting time for the injection treatments received in the healthcare centre.

In addition, a poster from the group project by Hiu Ching Yeung and Jia Li, entitled “Explore the Feasibility of Applying Online Distance Learning to Facilitate Pharmacy Continuous Professional Development in China” was presented at the Pharmacy Education Conference at the University of Manchester on 24 June 2019.

The project used an e-learning platform hosted in China to deliver the UK continuous professional development materials to Chinese pharmacists. From the previous surveys, students found community pharmacy services were recognised as the most urgently needed development in China. Therefore, they developed four units of e-learning materials focusing on the community pharmacy services in the UK, including consultation and Medicines Use Review skills. The e-learning course successfully obtained 2356 unit registrants within five weeks after the course launched in March 2019.

Furthermore, Caoimhe Stewart will also presented her second poster from the project, entitled “Bring care closer to home?- Service users’ perceptions of receiving injection treatment in hospital, community and at home” at the International Society of Oncology Pharmacy Practitioners (ISOPP) conference in London on 10 October 2019.

This poster will present the findings from two focus groups, including service users from the LloydsPharmacy Healthcare Centre, and patients who received injection treatment from the Christie Hospital. Participants demonstrated consistent views on the value of services, i.e. high-quality, personalised, flexible and convenient services. These findings can help to further enhance and expand the community injection services.
