DescriptionA blood cancer patient who has taken part in a clinical trial of a new drug has said she feels "so alive" after "one of the easiest treatments" she has had.

The drug, which is being trialled at The Christie Hospital in Manchester, is so new it does not have a name yet.

Adele Adams, 59, from Wallasey, Merseyside, who was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in February 2016, said she was "in the happiest place I've been in a long time".

The Christie said the drug could be a "game-changer in the fight against lymphoma".

DescriptionPress release posted 19 March 2024

A woman from Wallasey in Merseyside with Non Hodgkin lymphoma, who has only previously been in remission for a month in the past 8 years, is enjoying life thanks to daily trial drug capsules which have shrunk her tumours to such an extent they are too small to be measured.

The drug, which is known as NX-5948, is so new it doesn’t have a name, and could be a game-changer in the fight against lymphoma. It is being trialled at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester for patients with B-cell lymphoma* whose disease has come back after previous treatment or stopped responding to treatment. Lymphoma is cancer of the lymphatic system which is part of the body’s immune system that fights infections.

DescriptionA new cancer pill’s been hailed a "game-changer" in the battle against blood cancers after a patient struck with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma for eight years has now seen it "vanish."
Adele Adams, 59, has fought the cancer since February 2016 but in all that time has only ever been in remission for one month.

In 2022 she agreed to try a pill in a phase-1 trial at The Christie hospital, in Manchester, that is so new, it's still only known as 'NX-5948'.

Dr Kim Linton, consultant medical oncologist at The Christie, and the principal investigator for the trial said: "This new trial drug is designed to eliminate lymphoma from cells by degrading a critical growth protein.

"Some lymphomas develop resistance to the licensed drugs, which this new drug can overcome.

"The results we’re seeing are impressive and make us cautiously optimistic that we have found a new way to treat patients with difficult to treat B cell lymphomas.
