People with long-term mental health problems should be encouraged to get a pet because they play a therapeutic role for many patients, say researchers. Pets, in comparison to human relationships, understood boundaries and knew intuitively when to leave them alone. Cats, dogs, hamsters, birds and guinea pigs can offer valuable support for owners with psychological issues, a study found, and their consistent presence and close physical proximity can also provide an immediate source of calm.
