DescriptionResearchers at the University of Manchester have developed a modelling framework to help prevent satellite collisions in Earth’s increasingly crowded orbits. The system links mission performance requirements, such as satellite number, size, and altitude, with collision risk, allowing designers to identify safety trade-offs earlier in the planning process. With more than 11,800 active satellites currently in orbit, the tool aims to improve the long-term sustainability of space-based Earth observation missions. The research addresses the “space sustainability paradox”, where satellites used to support environmental and social goals on Earth may ultimately increase orbital congestion and debris.
