THE MIRROR: Are you working class, middle class or upper class?

Press/Media: Expert comment

Description

But Professor Fiona Devine, a sociologist at Manchester University, insists it remains a huge social class that is very divided.

She says: “During the 80s and up to the recession of the early 90s, you saw a lot of people suffer long-term unemployment and all of the cyclical ill-effects that this had on their lives.

“But over the same period we saw another sector of the working classes do rather well for themselves, rising up to blur the lines more and more between what we call working and middle classes.”
