DescriptionDr Eloise Moss, of Manchester University, explains in the documentary: “It becomes way more accessible to a lot more people, including the working classes. The Birmingham provincial press is telling us many more stories locally than ever before.

“Think about how popular reality TV is today. It was a kind of the Victorian version of that — the bad guys, the scandal and it becomes so much more exciting.

“Crime is the most commercial form of entertainment news in Victorian Britain because they’re doing something people can only aspire to — they’re breaking all the rules. It’s a form of social mobility.”

It was not just bad guys, either. The wives and girlfriends of the mobsters got in on the act too.
