DescriptionThe polio virus has been found in sewage water in London, but the risk of this disease to anyone vaccinated is extremely low, thanks to one of the world’s greatest scientific rivalries.

Compared with what we witnessed for Covid-19, the race for a polio vaccine happened in slow motion. In New York in 1916, thousands of children became paralysed. By the end of the year, about 2,400 had died. This was America’s first big polio outbreak. Without a cure or treatment, the response was all too familiar: travel bans, increased sanitation and a sense of urgency for research.
