Dr Thomas House, a specialist in mathematical epidemiology at the University of Manchester, said that leaders across Europe had generally acted sensibly and according to the information they had.

“It is terribly important in a democracy, even in times of crisis, to hold the government to account — but the idea that there was a ‘quick fix’ that would have made all this go away will be [proven false] over the next year,” he said.
