DescriptionProfessor Dame Nancy Rothwell, vice-chancellor of Manchester University, chairwoman of the Russell Group, and a Times education commissioner, said that sixth-formers should study both arts and science to broaden their horizons. The leading neuroscientist took A-levels in maths, physics, chemistry and art. Two new universities — London Interdisciplinary School (LIS) and Nmite, an engineering institution — want to attract teenagers with both science and arts backgrounds.

A-level pupils often find that timetabling clashes restrict them from straying across curriculum, but some do manage to take a broad range of subjects.
