The Work Beneath the Work

Six researchers. Six disciplines. One question:

What's missing from the way we measure research success?

One Wednesday at the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester, we mapped an answer across a board, across projects spanning forest restoration to digital justice to remote sensing.

Three zones: what institutions measure, what sustains the work, and what gets lost in the report.

We found five threads:

- Time. The years, not weeks, trust takes. Relational research is penalised by institutional clocks.
- Emotions. The doubt and care infrastructure erased by our methods.
- Recognition. The generosity reduced to a line in the acknowledgements.
- Local knowledge. The wisdom our publications undervalue is what our research depends on most.
-Experience. The embodied reality no report can hold. How do we stay accountable to it?

We left understanding research lives between us, between our work, the communities it serves, and what institutions miss.

If success depends on relationships, measuring success must change.
