Title The Express Media name/outlet The Express Media type Web Country/Territory United Kingdom Date 30/06/18 Description Academics and researchers from the University of Manchester have now warned that the horrific Saddleworth incident could become a recurring event in Britain.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Dr Gail Millin-Chalabi warned that Britain could be set for a dangerous surge in wildfires.
This warning follows an unprecedented heatwave in the UK, with record-breaking temperatures and fears of a hosepipe ban in the country.
Dr Millin-Chalabi, who specialises in wildfires, claimed that Britain should be investing in ways to manage and predict wildfires.
BBC host John Humphrys asked the academic: "Are you concerned that there will be more fires due to climate change?"
She responded: "The weather conditions have been unprecedented for this time of year if we look at what is happening in Greater Manchester.
"We have had a month of very hot sunny weather, temperatures around 24C and higher. It peaked at 30C on Tuesday.
"We have had hotter days in the past but the consistency of these hot spells is different.
"When you have a wildfire, within a few days you get a downpour of rain.
"But, we haven’t had that this time, and it doesn’t look like we will.
"We want to use satellite images to watch the country and predict patterns of wildfires."URL https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/981849/UK-weather-warning-British-heatwave-wildfires-Saddleworth Persons Gail Millin-Chalabi Title BBC Radio 5 Live: Stephen Nolan Degree of recognition National Media name/outlet BBC Radio 5 Live Media type Radio Country/Territory United Kingdom Date 30/06/18 Description Dr Gail Millin-Chalabi, School of Environment, Education and Development, spoke on BBC Breakfast, the BBC Radio 4 Today programme and BBC Radio 5 Live Stephen Nolan programme about what causes wildfires, and how to predict them using satellites and radar.
