VARIOUS NATIONAL MEDIA: Incredible fossil find may be first victims of dino-killer asteroid

    Press/Media: Research

    Description

A remarkable fossil deposit found in North Dakota seems to offer an unprecedented record of the mass extinction event that wiped out most of the dinosaurs 66 million years ago. The fossils appear to be animals that were killed within minutes of an asteroid striking Earth, in a flood triggered by the shattering impact.

“I have never seen a site like it,” says palaeontologist Phil Manning of the University of Manchester, UK, a member of the team studying the fossils. “You can almost see the event happening.”

DescriptionScientists have discovered a treasure trove of fossils that appear to record the moment a huge asteroid struck the Earth 66 million years ago, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the age of mammals.

The find at an archaeological site near Bowman in North Dakota is akin to coming upon “the geological equivalent of high-speed film of the very first moments after the impact”, according to Robert DePalma, the archaeologist who led the dig.

DescriptionScientists have found an extraordinary snapshot of the fallout from the asteroid impact that wiped out the dinosaurs 66 million years ago.

Excavations in North Dakota reveal fossils of fish and trees that were sprayed with rocky, glassy fragments that fell from the sky.

The deposits show evidence also of having been swamped with water - the consequence of the colossal sea surge that was generated by the impact.
