The ‘Weekend Effect’ in which patients admitted to hospital on Saturday and Sunday are more likely to die, is a myth which can be explained by the condition of patients, researchers have concluded.

The University of Manchester looked at more than three million patient records dating from the 2013/14 financial year.

They found that once severity was taken into account, there was no increased risk during the weekend except for a very small increase during Sunday daytime.
