Simulation results for 'Evaluation of Six Subgrid-Scale Models for LES of Wind Farms in Stable and Conventionally-Neutral Atmospheric Stratification'

Dataset

Description

This dataset presents the LES results and Matlab scripts necessary to generate vertical profiles of various flow variables (e.g., wind speed and direction) for stable and conventionally-neutral boundary-layer flows. Additionally, results from LES of wind-farm flow under these two stability conditions are provided. The results are generated using six different SGS models, namely: 1- standard Smagorinsky (Smag.), 2- wall-adapting local eddy viscosity (WALE), 3- anisotropic minimum-dissipation (AMD), 4- one equation turbulent kinetic energy (TKE), 5- stability dependent Smagorinsky (SDS), and 6- Lagrangian-averaged scale-dependent Smagorinsky (LASDD) models. The dataset is organised as follows: 1- "SBL" (folder containing results of the stable case), and 2- "CNBL" (folder containing results of the conventionally-neutral case). Each of the two folders contains the following: a- Matlab scripts that generate the figures, and b- folder titled "results" which contains the simulation results from the different SGS models. The subfolder "results" contains a subfolder of the results from each of the SGS models mentioned previously: 1- Smag, 2- WALE, 3- AMD, 4- TKE, 5- SDS, and 6- LASDD. The subfolder of each SGS model contains the following subfolders: a- "precursor", and b- "concurrent". The folder titled "precursor" contains files of the horizontal and time averaged vertical profiles of the boundary-layer flow. The folder "concurrent" contains: - files of the horizontal and time averaged vertical profiles of the wind-farm flow, - files providing time history of disc-averaged wind speed, yaw angle, thrust, and power of each turbine, - files providing streamwise distribution of the flow field along the wind farm, - wake profiles, and - terms of the kinetic energy budget over the farm. All simulations are conducted using an isotropic grid of 7.5-m elements. However, the SBL precursor flow is run using two additional grids of 15 m and 2 m. Therefore, in the "SBL" results, the folder "results" contains six subfolders for each of the SGS models, the "precursor" subfolder in each of them is classified into three subfolders: - "pre1" (15-m elements) - "pre2" (7.5-m elements) - "pre3" (2-m elements).
