Description
The James Chadwick Building at the University of Manchester hosts an advanced process control environment that integrates Siemens PCS 7 alongside the next-generation PCS Neo platforms.
This setup provides dual perspectives: a robust, industry-proven distributed control system (PCS 7) and an emerging, web-based engineering platform (PCS Neo) designed for future-ready digital operations.
Siemens SIMIT is also installed alongside PCS 7 and PCS Neo creating a central role in enhancing the teaching and research environment for process automation and control by providing a virtual simulation platform for pilot/demi plant environment where process dynamics, instrumentation, and control logic can be simulated in real time. It also provides a virtual and safe environment for students and researchers to test PCS 7 and PCS neo control strategies before applying them to physical pilot plants, explore fault scenarios, emergency responses, and “what-if” scenarios without disrupting operations. Hence, this control system acts as the backbone of control for pilot-scale process plants and demonstration rigs and ensures that students, researchers, and industrial collaborators gain exposure to widely deployed control technology in different sectors including oil & gas, chemical, FMCG and power sectors.
