The School of Arts, Languages and Cultures encourages both staff and students to be socially responsible citizens, reaching beyond the university to support and develop engagement with local schools and community groups.
Making a difference
Manchester Classics for All (MCfA) is one of 16 local networks of the national charity Classics for All (est. 2010).
Through its work, Latin and other classical subjects have been taking root in primary and secondary state schools across the city. Our staff and students have delivered lectures, workshops, and special events on Latin and Greek, helping to train non-specialist teachers keen to introduce classics to their schools, and introducing pupils of all ages to the ancient world.
Classical culture is also being championed by The Athena's Owls Project. Faced with the challenge of the COVID-19 lockdown, it has provided fun, home-schooling activities for primary-age children, including a ‘Roman Britain’ primary schools pack.
