Programme of Strategic Cooperation between Irish Aid and Higher-Education and Research Institutes (2007-2011) to evaluate programme proposals in the field of public health and HIV/AIDS between Irish institutions and counterparts in sub-Saharan Africa with a clear agenda to influence future policy. My appointment was based on the extensive research I have conducted into the social and economic impact of HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. In my evaluations I have pushed the case for supporting proposals that have a concrete agenda for building training capacity in the Global South rather than focusing mainly on academic exchanges, and those recommendations have been followed in final funding decisions.
