Organisation profile
The focus of our research is on how health service intervention, from policies to lab-based sciences, impact on society more widely. Our broad spectrum of internationally recognised expertise includes:
- health policy and practice evaluation and interventions;
- advanced methodological research in biostatistics and health economics;
- risk factors, variation in treatment response, clinical progression and outcomes in population health;
- epidemiological approaches to the analysis of biological samples and clinical data and to understanding inequalities in health;
- variations in care provision, exploiting the unique epidemiological database resources in drug misuse, and occupational health.
The division includes staff of cognate research disciplines across primary care, public, occupational, environmental and health, clinical and molecular epidemiology as well as methodologists from biostatistics, health economics, qualitative, policy, and health service research.
Our research
The division incorporates five established research areas.
Primary care
The Centre for Primary Care is a leading research centre for primary care research, and a founder member of the prestigious NIHR School for Primary Care Research.
We have a truly multidisciplinary staff and very active patient and public involvement partners, working together on research in quality and safety, health policy, politics and organisations, long-term conditions, and research methodology.
Health economics
The Manchester Centre for Health Economics develops and applies economic methods for studying behaviour and comparing alternative uses of resources. This critical mass of health economics expertise supports career development and a wide range of collaborative activity.
We have particular expertise in the econometric analysis of administrative and survey datasets, methods to value the benefits of health interventions and evaluate complex health and social care programmes, health technology assessment, workforce planning, resource allocation and the design and use of financial incentives.
Biostatistics
The Centre for Biostatistics has developed an international reputation for innovative statistical research, excellent teaching and interdisciplinary collaboration since 1997. We collaborate with clinical and scientific staff from across the Faculty in the design, implementation, analysis and reporting of medical research.
We have a professional focus for all medical statisticians within the Faculty, and hold half-day public seminars twice a year.
Epidemiology
The Epidemiology and Public Health Group (EPHG) undertakes internationally recognised research into the determinants of health and disease to improve the health of human populations through occupational and public health, molecular epidemiology and cognate disciplines.
We make a substantive contribution across multiple University research beacons, and include the WHO Collaborating Centre in Health Indicators.
