Biography

Dr Adam McMahon studied at The University of Oxford, The University of Bristol and Dalhousie University in Canada , where he gained a B.A. (Hons) in Chemistry, an M.Sc. in Analytical Chemistry and a Ph.D in Chemistry.

In 1988 he became Harwell-Wolfson Research Fellow, based at the UKAEA's Harwell Laboratory and Wolfson College, Oxford.  Then in 1991 he became Manager,  Research and Development in the AEA Technology's Analytical Sciences Centre at Harwell.

Before joining the Wolfson Molecular Imaging Centre in January 2005 Dr McMahon worked for 12 years as a Senior Lecturer in Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry Section Leader at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Research interests

Dr McMahon’s research interests include the development of trace analytical methods and instrumentation based on mass spectrometry, laser spectroscopy and chromatography.

His current research interests include:

  • imaging MALDI mass spectrometry of tissue samples,
  • the development and use of radio-labelled molecules for Positron Emission Tomography, both in product quality control and metabolite analysis and
  • the development of automated chemistry rigs for remote PET radiotracer synthesis .
