Biography

Adrian is a lecturer in healthcare leadership and management research with the Health Management Group at AMBS and has worked in the field of management research and consultancy for over 30 years. His interests include employee wellbeing, leadership, organisational change and development, employee survey design and the evaluation of training and development programmes. He lectures at post-graduate level on leadership and organisational behaviour and research methods and particularly enjoys supervision of doctoral students. At AMBS, his teaching has included the role of both Cohort Director and tutor on the NHSLeadershipAcademy’s ElizabethGarrettAnderson programme, the Masters in International Healthcare Leadership, delivery of theleadership and management component of the Higher Specialist Scientist Training Programme (HSST) for NHS Health Education England and 3rd year undergraduate modules.

He has worked on a range of projects including an evaluation of the NHSLeadershipAcademy’s leadership development programme (Intersect) and with an NHS mental health trust to develop their evaluation capacity. Previous projects also include an evaluation of the Health Trainer Service in the North West of England, a study of the impact of social movements in UK healthcare and a formative evaluation of innovation in public health (Making Every Contact Count). He has also conducted projects in the areas health inequalities and the impact of organisational development on local authority performance in the North West of England. 

Before coming to AMBS in 2007, he worked as a freelance research consultant working with the Organisational Capability Centre of Expertise of the UK Department for Work and Pensions, advising on organisational communication, the ageing workforce and leadership issues. Prior to this he worked as a senior research consultant at the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations, where he managed a range of large-scale research and evaluation projects, holding contracts with the UK Department of Trade and Industry, the European Commission, the Community Fund and the British Heart Foundation. Adrian has particular expertise in the areas of leadership and organisational change, employee well-being and the design and delivery of complex longitudinal research and evaluation programmes. He is a member of the British Psychological Society Organisational Psychology Division, and a graduate of the Tavistock Institute Advanced Organisational Consultancy programme.

Research interests

Adrian's main areas of expertise revolve around helping organisations manage complex change processes through the rigorous application of organisational theory and methodologies. He has particular expertise in the design and delivery of complex longitudinal research and evaluation programmes. He has worked in the areas of large-scale organisational change, job stress and well-being, job design, work-life-balance, staff appraisal and the evaluation of training and development programmes.
