Biography

 

Before coming to Manchester as Professor of Political Theory I was Professor of Economics at the University of Southampton, where I was also Dean of the Faculty of Law, Arts and Social Sciences. I have held visiting posts at The Centre for Study of Public Choice, Virginia, USA; All Souls College, Oxford; and the Australian National University. From 2001-2010 I was a Member of the UK Competition Commission.

I am currently a member of the Editorial Boards of a number of journals including: Politics, Philosophy and Economics; Constitutional Political Economy: and The Journal of Theoretical Politics.

From November 2013 I am Emeritus, but srill actively involved in research.

Research interests

Specific research interests:

My research interests lie in both positive and normative political theory. I am interested in areas such as:

  • Rational Actor Political Theory and Political Economy - whether from a methodological or a substantive perspective.
  • Democratic theory - including positive and normative debates.
  • Issues relating to the motivation of political agents and, in particular, expressive political behaviour.
  • Conservatism as a political philosophy.
  • Institutional and constitutional design.
