EVOLVE Tool - Evaluation of Older People's Living Environments
After graduating from the Postgraduate Diploma in Architecture course at the University of Sheffield, I undertook PhD research under the supervision of Professor Peter Blundell Jones. My Doctoral thesis was a historical study of the plans drawn up for Sheffield's city centre between 1936 and 1952.
In 2007, I started working as a Research Associate at the University of Sheffield on the EPSRC-funded project "EVOLVE - Design Evaluation of Older People's Extra-Care Housing: Development and Testing of an Evaluation Tool." I subsequently worked on the study "Extra-Care Housing for People with Sight Loss", funded by the Thomas Pocklington Trust, before moving to the University of Manchester in 2011 to work on the research project "Conditioning Demand", funded by the EPSRC and EDF.
Since then I have completed a number of research projects, including "Daylighting in Older People's Housing" funded by Thomas Pocklington Trust (Principal Investigator), "The Mathematization of Daylighting" funded by the RIBA and Thomas Pocklington Trust (Principal Investigator), and "Care Provision Fit for a Future Climate funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (Co-investigator). More recently I worked on the AHRC-funded study, “Pathways, Practices and Architectures: Containing Antimicrobial Resistance in the Cystic Fibrosis Clinic (PARC)” (Co-investigator).
I was appointed as Lecturer in Architecture at the University of Manchester in 2015.
My research centres on the intersection of Government policy and architectural practice, with a particular interest in the implications of an ageing population for housing design and the impact of building design on occupants’ health.
Much of my research has focused on the production of design guidance and the study of its effects on the built environment.
