I am Senior Lecturer in Global Political Economy at the University of Manchester.

Prior to this, I was Dean of Research at Leeds Trinity University, responsible for all aspects of research and impact for staff and PGR students. At the University of Derby, I was responsible for our REF submission in Social Policy and Social Work and at Leeds Beckett University I was variously Head of Politics and International Relations founding Director of the Centre for Applied Social Research and Director of the Policy Research Institute. I am on the Editorial Board of Capital and Class and a former Convenor of the IPEG Working Group of the British International Studies Association.

My areas of expertise are:
+ the political economy of inequality;
+ Labour market policy and implementation, especially via Public Employment Services;
+ Social inclusion interventions, including the use of arts and sports participation to support vulnerable social groups.
+ Policy and programme evaluation.
+ Systematic reviews to shape policies and interventions.
+ Research Methods.

My current research agenda has been focused on 'the new politics of inequality' since 2015. This is progressed through projects at different spatial scales such as research on the IMF and other international organisations and inequality, the reproduction of unequal social structures in the UK and the micro-politics of household social reproduction strategies. You can find a full list of my publications on Google Scholar.

I have undertaken funded research and consultancy for a wide range of prestigious funders including the European Commission, Inter-American Development Bank, Council of Europe, UK Central and Local Government, the British Academy and UK Research Councils (AHRC and ESRC).
